Portable heaters are brilliant aren’t they? They can be moved around to where you need them the most (portable!!) they generally offer an instant fix and can quickly warm up an area for much less than it would cost to put on the central heating, and before you’ve even managed to light the kindling for the wood stove.

Portable heaters, however, are fraught with potential dangers and need to be used safely, it’s estimated that they are responsible for more than 25,000 residential fires and 300 deaths every year, with a further 6,000 needing hospital treatment for burns after coming into contact with the hot surfaces of portable room heaters.

How can you make sure that you can be warm and toasty with a portable heater, whilst keeping yourself and your family safe?

  • Only buy portable heaters which have the current safety features and a UL (Underwriters Laboratory) label attached to it.
  • Choose a portable heater which has a thermostat control – that way you won’t be wasting precious cash making the room too hot.
  • Make sure that your portable heater is the right size for the room you intend to use it in. There will probably be a sizing table with the heater – bigger is not always better . . .
  • Put the heater on a suitable surface which is well away from children and animals. You really don’t want it to be where people are walking past.
