Falls are the major cause of elderly people visiting the emergency room, and one in three persons over the age of 65 years in the USA are injured due to a fall every year. Even if you’ve lived in your home for most of your life, as you get older it can become a more dangerous environment. Check out the following questions, is the answer YES? If not, you might need to do something about it to prevent you from joining these worrying statistics.

  • Are the doors and windows easily opened and closed?
  • Are doorsteps and thresholds low making stepping over them easy?
  • Is there enough space to move around while you open and close the door?
  • Is there a peephole in the front door, at the correct height for you to see easily?
  • Are the surfaces in your home non-slip?
  • Do you have any doormats and rugs firmly tacked down?
  • Are any changes in the floor levels well marked?
  • Are there handrails on both sides of your staircase?
  • Are the stairs deep enough to take your whole foot?

If not, then you really need to make a few changes to your home to make it into an altogether safer environment.
